Set Up HTTPS Correctly in Kirksville
Install a valid certificate for the intended hostnames, serve the site over HTTPS, redirect HTTP consistently, and verify internal resources and renewal.
HTTPS setup has several moving parts: the certificate must cover the intended hostname, the server must present the correct certificate, HTTP traffic must reach the secure site predictably, and the page's own resources must load securely too.
Installing a certificate is only one step.
Confirm the hostnames
Decide which public hostname is canonical and which variants must still answer.
If both the root domain and www variant receive HTTPS requests, the certificate and server configuration need to handle those names appropriately before any redirect occurs.
Install through the authorized hosting path
Many hosting platforms automate certificate issuance and renewal.
Others use an ACME client or another certificate-management process.
Use the supported method for the actual host rather than copying certificate files from an unrelated environment.
Redirect HTTP to HTTPS
Modern guidance recommends serving the secure version consistently and redirecting HTTP requests to HTTPS.
Preserve the requested path during the redirect so a visitor requesting a deep page reaches the same page securely rather than being sent to the homepage.
Check internal resources
Images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts, forms, and embedded resources should use HTTPS where required.
An HTTPS page that still loads resources over HTTP can produce mixed-content problems.
Verify the certificate and renewal path
After setup, check:
- intended hostname coverage;
- certificate validity and chain;
- HTTP redirect behavior;
- browser behavior;
- automated renewal or provider-managed renewal;
- key pages and forms.
HTTPS protects data in transit. It does not replace application security, updates, backups, or access control.
