A Change in Services
Introduction
Technology changes, and so do the needs of the people who use it.
Switchboard Tech Services provides computer repair, Linux support, website design and maintenance, software troubleshooting, and specialized technical services in the Kirksville area.
Computer repair is available for desktops, laptops, and other computer systems when the repair is practical and economically reasonable. I can diagnose hardware and software problems, replace or upgrade suitable components, resolve operating-system problems, recover or migrate data, and help determine whether a computer is worth repairing.
Not every hardware problem makes sense to repair. I may decline repairs when the cost of parts and labor approaches the replacement value of the computer, when replacement components are unavailable, or when modern compact construction makes a repair impractical or excessively risky.
In particular, monitor and display-panel replacement is generally not offered. Laptop screen replacements and similarly expensive repairs will be evaluated individually and may be declined when the repair would cost nearly as much as replacing the computer.
The goal is practical technology service—not performing an expensive repair simply because it is technically possible.

Repairs evaluated individually
Switchboard Tech Services offers computer repair, but not every repair is practical or financially sensible.
Some jobs may be declined after evaluation, including:
- Monitor and display repairs — Monitor panel replacement and internal monitor repair are generally not offered.
- Laptop screen replacement — May be declined when parts and labor approach the value of the computer.
- Extremely compact or highly integrated hardware — Repairs may be declined when components are inaccessible, permanently integrated, or impractical to replace safely.
- Unavailable or prohibitively expensive parts — A repair cannot reasonably proceed when suitable replacement components cannot be obtained at a sensible cost.
- Repairs approaching replacement cost — I may recommend replacing the computer instead of investing heavily in an aging or low-value system.
- Phones and tablets — These are not a primary repair service and may be declined, particularly for screen, board-level, or highly integrated repairs.
- Appliances and unrelated electronics — Switchboard remains primarily a computer and technology service rather than a general appliance-repair business.
When a repair does not make sense, I would rather tell you that before you spend the money.
The focus is practical repair: diagnose the problem, determine what can reasonably be fixed, and choose the solution that makes sense for the equipment and its owner.
