Take Control of a Website Still Managed by an Old Agency in Luray
Inventory domain, DNS, hosting, CMS, source code, email, analytics, forms, backups, licenses, and integrations before changing agency access or moving the site.
Ending an agency relationship safely starts with an ownership inventory.
Do not remove the old agency's access until the business knows which accounts, files, services, and recovery methods the agency still controls.
Inventory every critical system
Document:
- domain registrar;
- DNS provider;
- website hosting;
- CMS or website platform;
- source-code repository;
- business email dependencies;
- analytics;
- forms;
- media;
- licenses;
- backups;
- third-party integrations.
These may be spread across several providers.
Separate business-owned and vendor-managed accounts
A domain registration, primary hosting account, business email account, analytics property, and other long-lived assets are usually safer when the business has direct control.
Some vendor service accounts may reasonably remain vendor-managed while that vendor relationship exists.
Document the distinction rather than assuming every login must be transferred.
Preserve data before changing access
Obtain current backups, exports, source files, configuration details, and other business-owned assets before credentials or permissions change.
Do not create a new access problem while trying to solve the old one.
Change recovery paths after handoff
Once control is verified, update passwords, recovery email addresses, recovery phone numbers, and multi-factor authentication as appropriate.
Remove former users only after confirming that required business access remains intact.
Document remaining dependencies
A theme license, external service, deployment process, or custom integration may still depend on the former agency even after the main accounts move.
Record those dependencies so the next developer can address them deliberately.
This is a technical handoff process, not a substitute for resolving contract or ownership disputes.
