A small camera should be placed only where the support method, access, power, and signal are all straightforward.

Under Switchboard's current service boundary, this is a **non-invasive placement service**.

It does **not** include drilling, nailing, screwing, anchoring, or permanently fastening a camera or bracket into walls, trim, siding, doors, ceilings, eaves, or other permanent parts of the home.

That rule takes priority over older camera-mounting language.

## Configure the camera before placing it

When practical, make sure the camera already works before deciding where it will live.

Confirm:

- app or hub pairing;
- live view;
- network connection;
- firmware state;
- basic recording or alert behavior.

A placement problem is much easier to diagnose when the electronics are already known to work.

## Identify a safe non-invasive support method

Depending on the camera and manufacturer guidance, acceptable options may include:

- a freestanding base;
- an existing compatible customer-installed bracket;
- a removable clamp;
- a shelf or furniture location;
- a pressure-fit or other genuinely non-permanent support;
- a manufacturer-approved removable adhesive method where it is suitable for the surface and device.

The support method still needs to be rated and appropriate for the camera.

"Removable" does not mean improvised.

If the camera manufacturer requires permanent attachment to the building for safe use, Switchboard can explain that requirement but does not perform the fastening.

## Check the location itself

A useful camera position should balance:

- field of view;
- network signal;
- safe access;
- charging or cable access;
- privacy;
- weather exposure for outdoor-rated equipment.

The highest or widest-looking location is not automatically best.

A camera should not be placed where servicing it later requires unsafe climbing.

## Keep cables and batteries serviceable

For a battery camera, the customer needs a realistic way to recharge or replace the battery.

For a plug-in camera, the existing cable and outlet arrangement must already be safe and accessible.

This service does not add electrical circuits, run hidden wiring, drill cable penetrations, or create new permanent cable routes.

Avoid placing a cable under strain or where routine movement will pull on the camera.

## Aim for the useful area, not maximum coverage

A camera can technically see a huge area and still produce poor alerts.

Aim it around the customer's intended use.

For example, a narrower view of a doorway or room may be more useful than including a street, tree, or busy background that constantly triggers motion events.

Placement and notification behavior should support each other.

## Verify Wi-Fi after positioning

Moving a camera even a short distance can change its network reliability.

After placement, check:

- live view;
- connection stability;
- event triggering;
- notifications;
- recording where applicable.

If the target location has poor Wi-Fi, repositioning the camera or improving network coverage may be more useful than blaming the device.

## Stop when the job becomes construction or trade work

Switchboard does not perform:

- permanent wall or exterior fastening;
- anchors or drilled brackets;
- roof or tower work;
- high-ladder installation;
- masonry drilling;
- hidden-wire routing;
- electrical work;
- uncertain structural attachment.

The useful result is a small camera positioned securely through a legitimate non-invasive method, aimed correctly, still reachable for maintenance, and proven to work after it is placed.
