# Connect a Printer to Wi-Fi in Kirksville

Move an existing compatible printer onto the current home Wi-Fi network, then verify that the computer can actually discover it and print.

A wireless printer has to complete two separate steps before it is useful:

1. the **printer** has to join the correct Wi-Fi network;
2. the **computer or device** has to find and use that printer.

Stopping after step one is why a printer can say "connected" while the computer still cannot print.

## Check the printer's actual wireless capability

Before changing router settings, identify the printer model and confirm what its Wi-Fi hardware supports.

Printers vary in:

- supported wireless bands;
- supported security modes;
- onboarding method;
- whether setup happens from the control panel, a vendor app, USB-assisted setup, WPS, or a temporary setup network.

It is not accurate to assume every printer is 2.4 GHz-only or that every model supports the same security choices.

The model documentation should control that decision.

## Clear old network information when needed

A printer that worked with an older router may still be trying to join the old network name with the old password.

If the router, SSID, or passphrase changed, stale wireless settings may need to be replaced.

That does not always require a full factory reset.

If the printer provides a supported way to reset only network settings or rerun wireless onboarding, that is usually more proportionate than erasing every device preference.

## Join the correct network

Once the printer is ready for onboarding, connect it to the household's intended Wi-Fi network using the supported method for that model.

The printer should then receive a normal local network connection.

That can be confirmed through the printer's display, network report, router device list, or another supported method depending on the equipment.

Customer Wi-Fi credentials remain private and should not be exposed or retained unnecessarily.

## Do not weaken the whole network immediately

Older printers can create compatibility problems with newer router security or band configurations.

That deserves investigation, but the first response should not be to downgrade the entire household network blindly.

First verify:

- what the printer actually supports;
- whether the router offers a compatible guest or device-specific option;
- whether a firmware update or different onboarding path exists;
- whether the printer is simply using stale settings.

Only then should broader network changes be considered.

## Add or refresh the printer on the computer

Once the printer is on Wi-Fi, the customer's computer may still point at an obsolete printer entry or old network address.

The printer may need to be added again through the operating system's supported printing interface or current vendor software.

Duplicate queues should be avoided because "Printer," "Printer (Copy 1)," and an obsolete offline queue can create more confusion than the original problem.

## Test an actual print job

The job is complete only when the customer's real computer or device sends a page successfully.

That confirms both halves of the setup:

**printer ↔ Wi-Fi** and **computer ↔ printer**.

If several computers need stable access to the same network printer, the next task is multi-computer network printing rather than repeating ad-hoc setup separately on each device.
