# Why Won't My Computer Connect to Wi-Fi?

Diagnose a computer that cannot join a known Wi-Fi network by separating network-wide trouble from radio, password, saved-profile, adapter, driver, security, and compatibility problems on one device.

If one computer will not connect to Wi-Fi while phones and other devices connect normally, the problem is more likely to be on that computer or in the compatibility between that computer and the router.

**Switchboard Tech Services offers local Kirksville diagnosis for computers that can see a Wi-Fi network but cannot join it, or whose wireless adapter is missing or disabled.**

## First check whether the network itself works

Before changing the computer, test another device on the same Wi-Fi.

If every device is offline, the problem belongs to the router, modem, provider connection, or broader home network.

If other devices connect normally, keep the diagnosis focused on the one computer.

That distinction prevents unnecessary router resets and password changes.

## Does the computer see the network name?

If the expected Wi-Fi network does not appear at all, check:

- Wi-Fi is turned on;
- Airplane mode is off;
- the wireless adapter appears in Windows;
- the adapter is enabled;
- other nearby networks appear;
- the computer is close enough to the access point.

If no wireless networks appear, the problem is different from an authentication failure.

It may involve the adapter, driver, radio state, or hardware.

## If the network appears but will not connect

The failure may involve:

- incorrect password;
- stale saved credentials;
- damaged saved profile;
- security-mode incompatibility;
- driver trouble;
- router access controls.

If the correct password is known, current Windows lets the user forget the network under **Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks** and then join it again.

Do not forget the profile unless the customer actually knows the password.

Switchboard should not guess, weaken, or bypass network credentials.

## Check the wireless adapter itself

Device Manager can show whether the adapter is present and whether Windows reports a device problem.

If the adapter disappeared after a change or update, investigate the driver and hardware rather than repeatedly retyping the Wi-Fi password.

Use drivers from Windows Update, the computer manufacturer, or the adapter manufacturer where appropriate.

Avoid generic driver-download websites.

## Older adapters can have compatibility limits

An older wireless adapter may not support the same Wi-Fi bands or security modes as a newer router.

Possible differences include:

- 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz or 6 GHz support;
- newer WPA security modes;
- older driver support;
- adapter-specific channel or regional limitations.

Do not reduce the router's security globally just to preserve one old adapter.

If an older adapter cannot support the household's normal secure configuration, replacing the adapter may be the cleaner solution.

## Test another known-good network

A useful isolation test is to connect the computer to another network the customer is authorized to use, such as a phone hotspot.

If the computer connects reliably there, the wireless hardware is at least functioning and the problem may be specific to the home router/profile/security combination.

If it cannot connect to any known-good network, suspicion shifts toward the computer.

## Use Network reset only after simpler checks

Microsoft currently treats Windows **Network reset** as a last-resort troubleshooting step.

It removes installed network adapters and resets their settings before reinstalling them after restart.

That can also affect VPN clients, virtual switches, and network profiles.

Do not use it as the first response to a wrong password or disabled radio.

The useful diagnostic order is: determine whether the network works, determine whether the computer can see it, separate authentication from adapter failure, then change only the layer that has evidence against it.
