# Computer Shuts Down Without Warning? Kirksville Diagnosis

Diagnose a computer that abruptly loses power during use by checking whether the event is thermal, battery-related, charger-related, external-power-related, or another hardware protection problem.

Practical reference

An instant black screen and loss of power is not the same symptom as a normal Windows shutdown.

**When a computer simply turns off without warning, power and heat deserve attention before ordinary software troubleshooting.**

## Confirm that it is actually losing power

A normal shutdown shows Windows closing down.

An abrupt power loss may look more like:

- the screen instantly going black;
- fans stopping immediately;
- indicator lights disappearing;
- no "Shutting down" message;
- the machine remaining off until the power button is pressed again.

Windows may record that the previous shutdown was unexpected, but a missing detailed log can be consistent with the system losing power too quickly to record the original cause.

## Check whether the shutdown follows heat or workload

Does the computer turn off:

- while gaming;
- during rendering or another heavy workload;
- after it has been running for a while;
- when the laptop is on a soft surface;
- when the fan becomes unusually loud or stops sounding normal?

Blocked vents, a failed fan, heavy dust, or another cooling fault can cause temperatures to climb until hardware protection shuts the system down.

Repeated thermal shutdowns should not be treated as a benchmark to see how many times the computer can survive.

## For laptops, compare battery and charger behavior

Useful clues include whether the laptop shuts down:

- only on battery;
- only while charging;
- when the charger plug moves;
- at a certain reported battery level;
- immediately after AC power is removed.

A swollen battery, damaged charging connector, burning smell, unusual heat, or sparking is a stop condition.

The machine should not continue to be charged or stressed while a damaged battery or connector is suspected.

## For desktops, stay on the safe side of the power supply

Safe checks include:

- confirming the wall outlet or power strip is working;
- checking the detachable power cable;
- checking for a loose external connection;
- noting whether the problem occurs under load.

The person doing the work does not open computer power supplies or probe mains-voltage circuitry as routine consumer service.

A power-supply problem can be diagnosed by behavior and appropriate component-level testing without treating the inside of a PSU as a normal DIY area.

## Do not disable safety protections

Thermal shutdowns and electrical protection exist for a reason.

A computer that powers off because it is overheating should be cooled and repaired, not configured to ignore the condition.

Likewise, software changes will not repair a broken charger, swollen battery, unstable power supply, or damaged power connector.

The correct path is to determine whether heat, battery, charging, external power, or another hardware condition is causing the loss of power and then stop before the failure damages more than the original component.
