Why Won't Bluetooth Work on My Computer?
Diagnose broad Bluetooth failure by confirming the computer has a Bluetooth radio, then checking enablement, driver state, pairing, another known-good device, and hardware support.
If Bluetooth does not work, first determine whether the computer still has a functioning Bluetooth radio.
Switchboard Tech Services offers local Kirksville diagnosis for missing, disabled, or unreliable Bluetooth on Windows computers.
Is Bluetooth present at all?
Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices and Device Manager.
If Bluetooth controls are missing entirely, possible causes include a disabled radio, missing driver, failed internal adapter, firmware trouble, or a disconnected USB Bluetooth adapter.
That is different from one accessory refusing to pair.
If Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disappeared together, remember that many laptops use one combined wireless card. A shared driver, firmware, or hardware problem becomes more plausible.
Check the driver before blaming the accessory
If the Bluetooth adapter appears with an error state, investigate the driver.
Microsoft currently supports updating the driver, reinstalling the adapter through Device Manager, and rolling back the driver when Bluetooth worked before a recent driver or Windows update and Roll Back Driver is available.
If Windows cannot supply a working driver, use the PC manufacturer's support site.
Avoid unknown driver packages.
If Bluetooth exists but one device will not pair
Confirm that the accessory is:
- in pairing mode;
- within range;
- adequately charged;
- not already captured by another device.
Remove a stale pairing if one exists and pair again using the manufacturer's normal procedure.
Do not factory-reset the accessory before simpler checks unless the manufacturer recommends it.
Test another Bluetooth device
If several known-good accessories fail on the same computer, the computer's Bluetooth subsystem becomes more suspicious.
If another accessory works normally, focus on the original device, its battery, firmware, supported profiles, or pairing history.
Older Bluetooth hardware can have feature limits
An older adapter may support basic devices without supporting every feature of a newer headset, controller, or low-energy accessory.
Do not assume full compatibility merely because both products use Bluetooth.
A USB Bluetooth adapter can be a useful comparison
On a suitable PC, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can help isolate failed internal hardware.
If the USB adapter works reliably while the internal radio remains missing or unstable, suspicion shifts toward the internal adapter, antenna, driver, or firmware path.
The correct order is to prove the radio exists, prove Windows can drive it, test more than one accessory, then decide whether the problem belongs to the computer or the device.
