A file-upload field adds more than a button.

The site now has to decide what files are allowed, how large they may be, where they are stored, who can access them, and when they should be deleted.

## Define the use case first

Choose file types and size limits from the actual business need.

A photo-based estimate form may need common image formats. A document workflow may need PDFs or another narrow set of files.

Do not accept arbitrary file types because the browser allows it.

## Validate on the server

The HTML accept attribute can guide the user's file picker, but MDN explicitly notes that it does not validate the selected file type.

Server-side checks are still required.

A robust upload flow should validate allowed extensions and content type, enforce size limits, and reject unexpected files before they enter the normal workflow.

## Protect storage

OWASP recommends using allow-listed file types, generated storage names, controlled permissions, and storage outside the web root where practical.

The original filename can be retained as display metadata without making it the storage path.

Uploaded files should not become casually browsable public assets.

## Give clear upload feedback

The customer should know whether the upload succeeded, failed, exceeded the size limit, or used an unsupported type.

Do not erase the rest of the form merely because one file failed validation.

## Define retention and staff access

Decide who needs the file, where staff retrieve it, and how long it should remain stored.

Files submitted for a temporary estimate may not need indefinite retention.
