An abandoned WordPress theme should be replaced because its presentation layer is becoming difficult to maintain, not because the site needs a fashionable redesign.

The first job is to determine what the theme controls and what can be preserved independently.

## Confirm the theme is really unsupported

Check the theme's current support and update status before declaring it abandoned.

A theme that simply has not changed recently is not necessarily broken. The problem is lack of maintained compatibility, support, or a practical upgrade path.

## Inventory theme-specific dependencies

Before switching anything, record:

- child-theme changes;
- copied template files;
- custom functions;
- widget areas;
- menus;
- theme-specific shortcodes or blocks;
- page templates;
- custom CSS;
- content stored through theme features.

That reveals what may disappear when the old theme is removed.

## Separate content from presentation

Posts, pages, media, URLs, and other normal WordPress content should be treated as assets.

Theme replacement should not automatically become a content purge.

Where the theme has trapped content inside proprietary templates or shortcodes, migrate that material deliberately into a maintainable structure.

## Test the replacement away from the live site

Build and test representative pages before cutover.

Check navigation, forms, media, important templates, mobile layouts, and admin editing.

Keep a current backup and rollback path until the replacement has been verified.

## Preserve URLs where practical

Changing the visual layer does not require changing useful page addresses.

If URLs do change for a legitimate reason, map old addresses to meaningful replacements instead of creating avoidable broken links.
