Set Up a Staging Website Before Risky Changes in Gibbs

Create an isolated environment close enough to production to test updates, migrations, code changes, or configuration without using real customers as the test audience.

A staging site gives risky changes somewhere to fail before they reach customers.

It should reproduce the production behavior relevant to the test without becoming a public duplicate of the live site.

Define what the test needs to reproduce

A plugin update, framework migration, runtime change, checkout modification, or application change may each require different levels of parity.

Copy the configuration and data needed to reproduce that risk.

Do not duplicate production blindly.

Protect customer information

Live databases can contain form submissions, customer records, accounts, or other sensitive information.

Use sanitized or limited data where practical, and restrict staging access to the people who actually need it.

Staging should not become an unmanaged second copy of private production data.

Prevent accidental public use

Use access controls or other appropriate restrictions so customers do not submit real requests to staging.

Keep staging out of normal search indexing and make sure staging-specific restrictions do not accidentally move into production during deployment.

Separate external side effects

Payment, email, API, analytics, webhook, or other integrations may need test credentials or disabled actions.

A staging test should not send production notifications or create live transactions merely because it copied production configuration.

Keep production backups anyway

Staging reduces deployment risk. It does not replace a production backup and rollback plan.

Before promotion, preserve a current recovery point.

After deployment, verify the live site again because production can differ from staging.
