Build Custom Calculators and Simple Web Tools in Ewing
Build a narrow calculator, estimator, configurator, or decision tool around a real formula or rule while exposing assumptions, limits, and validation clearly.
A useful website calculator should answer one real question well.
It does not need to become a full application simply because the result requires custom logic.
Define the decision the tool supports
Start with the output.
What should the visitor be able to estimate, compare, configure, or decide after using the tool?
Then identify only the inputs that materially change that result.
A field that does not affect the formula or decision probably does not belong in the interface.
Make the rules explicit
Document the formula, lookup table, range, or decision logic before building the screen around it.
If the result is an estimate, say so.
If the calculation assumes a particular unit, rate, condition, or boundary, place that information near the output rather than hiding it in fine print.
Validate impossible input
A useful tool should reject values that cannot make sense and explain what needs correction.
Missing data, contradictory selections, invalid ranges, and unit mismatches should produce understandable messages instead of strange output.
Keep high-stakes calculations in scope
Financial, medical, legal, engineering, safety, or other regulated calculations may require qualified domain expertise beyond ordinary web development.
A polished interface does not make an unverified formula trustworthy.
The business remains responsible for the accuracy and authority of the rules the tool implements.
Design for phones first
The input flow should work with a narrow screen and ordinary touch controls.
Avoid decorative animation or complex charts when a few fields and a clear result communicate the answer better.
