Fix a Broken WordPress Theme in Brashear

Separate theme failures from plugin, content, core, and server problems before repairing templates, child-theme customizations, or replacing an unsupportable theme.

A broken WordPress layout does not automatically mean the theme is the cause.

Theme code, child-theme changes, plugins, PHP changes, custom snippets, and content can interact. The repair starts by proving which layer is failing.

Capture the failure and recent changes

Document what is wrong:

  • missing or malformed layouts;
  • PHP errors;
  • blank pages;
  • broken templates;
  • missing styles;
  • failures affecting only certain page types.

Then identify what changed before the problem appeared.

Protect the current site

Back up the database and files before modifying theme code or switching components.

If the broken site contains recent content or uploads, preserve those before restoring an older backup.

Compare parent theme, child theme, and custom code

A child theme may contain overrides that no longer match its parent theme after an update.

Custom functions or copied template files can also become stale.

Do not edit vendor or parent-theme files as a routine repair method when those edits would be overwritten during a future update.

Use temporary theme switching as a diagnostic

When it is safe to do so, testing with a known working theme can help determine whether the active theme is responsible.

That is a diagnostic step, not necessarily the final design solution.

The site should be tested carefully because switching themes can affect menus, widgets, templates, and presentation.

Know when replacement is cleaner

An abandoned theme, heavily patched codebase, or layout system that repeatedly breaks after ordinary updates may cost more to maintain than to replace.

The decision should consider content preservation and URLs separately from the theme itself.
