Build a Custom Import or Export Workflow in Brashear
Define the source, destination, schema, field mapping, validation, duplicate rules, error reporting, and recovery path before automating repeatable data movement.
A reliable import or export process needs explicit rules before it needs automation.
Moving data quickly is not useful if the system cannot explain which records were accepted, changed, rejected, or duplicated.
Define the source of truth
Identify where the authoritative data comes from and where it is going.
That may be a CSV file, spreadsheet export, API, database extract, or another documented format.
Record the expected encoding, columns, identifiers, and required fields.
Map fields explicitly
Write down how each source field maps to the destination.
Do not silently infer that two similar column names mean the same thing.
If data must be transformed, document the rule so the same input produces the same output later.
Validate before writing
A useful import should identify missing required values, malformed data, unexpected categories, and other rejected rows before partial bad data spreads through the application.
Where practical, a dry run can report what would happen without committing changes.
Decide what duplicates mean
The system needs a stable rule for identifying the same record.
Then define whether a repeat should:
- be skipped;
- update an existing record;
- create a new version;
- be rejected for review.
Do not guess differently from one import to the next.
Make exports portable
Exports should be useful outside the application when the business needs data portability.
Use documented fields and common formats where practical, and explain any transformations.
