# Move Website Hosting Without Breaking Business Email in Alexandria

Treat web hosting and mail routing as separate systems, preserve existing mail-related DNS records, and change only the records required for the website move.

Moving the website does not automatically require moving business email.

The safer approach is to treat web hosting and mail routing as separate services and preserve the mail-related DNS records unless the email provider is changing too.

## Export the current DNS zone first

Before making changes, record the current DNS configuration.

Pay particular attention to:

- website A or AAAA records;
- website CNAME records;
- MX records;
- SPF records;
- DKIM records;
- DMARC records;
- provider-verification records;
- other TXT or CNAME records tied to mail services.

The exact records depend on the current providers.

## Change only what the website move requires

A normal hosting move may require changing the records that send web traffic to the old server.

It does not require replacing unrelated mail-routing or authentication records.

MX records direct incoming mail toward the mail provider, while SPF, DKIM, and DMARC support sending-domain authentication and policy.

## Plan DNS timing

Where useful, adjust TTL values before the planned cutover so changed web records can propagate more quickly.

Do not change TTLs blindly if the DNS provider or service setup has special requirements.

Keep the old hosting available during the transition when practical.

## Test email before and after cutover

Verify:

- inbound mail;
- outbound mail;
- important aliases or groups;
- form-generated messages;
- mail from the website where applicable.

Test actual receipt rather than assuming that a DNS change left everything untouched.

## Keep a rollback path

If the new web host fails, the team should know which website records to restore without changing the mail configuration.
