## Why this matters

Marketers can use email images to infer the type of device you use, adding detail to a customer profile. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

## The protection

Proton's tracker protection removes known pixels and proxies other remote images.

## Take action

Use the protected Proton app for reading mail. The sender may still learn details you volunteer through a form or reply. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
