Switch to Protonmail Reason #7: Hide your IP address from many remote images in incoming mail
Loading an image from a sender-controlled server can reveal your network address and approximate location.
Why this matters
Loading an image from a sender-controlled server can reveal your network address and approximate location. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.
The protection
Proton preloads remote images through a proxy with a generic address for covered incoming messages.
Take action
Leave tracking protection on and avoid opening suspicious external links. An email reply still identifies you to its recipient. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
