Switch to Protonmail Reason #48: Make sensitive email less accessible to the provider that stores it

A provider is a powerful intermediary.

Why this matters

A provider is a powerful intermediary. Reducing what it can read limits one route for unnecessary disclosure. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

The protection

Proton's zero-access encryption protects stored message bodies and attachments; automatic end-to-end encryption covers Proton-to-Proton mail.

Take action

Use the right encryption route for each recipient. Metadata and unencrypted external mail in transit remain important limits. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
