Switch to Protonmail Reason #44: Reduce the usefulness of a leaked signup address by turning off its alias
A stolen address is useful for spam and targeted password-reset attempts long after a breach.
Why this matters
A stolen address is useful for spam and targeted password-reset attempts long after a breach. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.
The protection
Disabling a service-specific alias cuts off future delivery to that alias.
Take action
Move the legitimate account to a fresh alias before shutting the old one down. Disabling mail does not erase leaked records. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
