A compromised signup address can become a permanent target for phishing if it is your only identity.
Why this matters
A compromised signup address can become a permanent target for phishing if it is your only identity. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.
The protection
A hide-my-email alias can be disabled without closing the Proton inbox it forwards to.
Take action
Replace the address on important accounts first, then disable it. A service may still hold older copies of your data. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
