Switch to Protonmail Reason #4: Protect stored attachments alongside the messages that contain them
Attachments often contain statements, IDs, and documents more revealing than the email text.
Why this matters
Attachments often contain statements, IDs, and documents more revealing than the email text. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.
The protection
Proton says attachments in its mailbox are stored with zero-access encryption; Proton-to-Proton attachments are end-to-end encrypted.
Take action
Move sensitive files through an encrypted conversation when possible. The recipient can still save or forward a decrypted file. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
