## Why this matters

A protected first message is only half a conversation if the response returns through ordinary email. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

## The protection

The external encrypted message portal allows the recipient to reply securely within its limits.

## Take action

Explain how to use the protected reply link and verify later messages stay protected. Your own subsequent replies require encryption to be re-enabled. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
