## Why this matters

Security that requires elaborate setup is easy to postpone until after a sensitive exchange has already happened. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

## The protection

Proton applies end-to-end encryption automatically between Proton users.

## Take action

Invite the people with whom you exchange sensitive mail to use Proton. Verify their addresses and devices as you would with any secure channel. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
