Switch to Protonmail Reason #35: Reduce the value of a stolen copy of your provider's stored mailbox data

A mailbox breach can expose years of intimate content if the server stores it in readable form.

Why this matters

A mailbox breach can expose years of intimate content if the server stores it in readable form. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

The protection

Proton stores mailbox contents with zero-access encryption, so copied encrypted data is less useful without the keys.

Take action

Use a strong unique password and protect devices where mail is decrypted. Account compromise can still reveal content. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
