## Why this matters

Messages about a diagnosis, debt, or a dispute can remain in a mailbox for years. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

## The protection

Proton's zero-access storage limits provider access to message bodies and attachments.

## Take action

Use the encrypted mailbox for future sensitive records, while checking whether the other party's provider retains a readable copy. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
