Switch to Protonmail Reason #3: Protect stored messages received from outside providers with zero-access encryption

An outside sender may use ordinary email, but that does not mean the copy in your long-term mailbox should remain readable to your provider.

Why this matters

An outside sender may use ordinary email, but that does not mean the copy in your long-term mailbox should remain readable to your provider. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

The protection

Proton encrypts received messages in storage after processing unencrypted incoming mail for spam and threats.

Take action

Use Proton as the receiving mailbox and understand that the sending provider may retain its own readable copy. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
