Switch to Protonmail Reason #24: Verify a trusted correspondent's PGP key before sharing sensitive information

Encryption to the wrong key can defeat the point of a protected message.

Why this matters

Encryption to the wrong key can defeat the point of a protected message. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

The protection

Proton offers key trust and verification tools for contacts using PGP.

Take action

Confirm a sensitive contact's key through an independent channel before trusting it. A displayed name alone is not identity proof. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
