Switch to Protonmail Reason #23: Use PGP with outside contacts who have configured it

A contact's unwillingness to change providers does not have to force plaintext email.

Why this matters

A contact's unwillingness to change providers does not have to force plaintext email. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

The protection

Proton supports PGP encryption with compatible outside contacts once the right keys are configured.

Take action

Exchange and verify keys before sending confidential material. PGP setup requires work by both parties. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
