Switch to Protonmail Reason #15: Identify which service exposed an address by checking the alias that receives spam

When every company gets the same address, it is hard to know where unwanted mail began.

Why this matters

When every company gets the same address, it is hard to know where unwanted mail began. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

The protection

A unique alias for each signup makes the destination of spam or breach notifications informative.

Take action

Label aliases by service and review unexpected mail. Spam alone is a clue, not conclusive proof of who disclosed the address. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
