Switch to Protonmail Reason #14: Disable an alias after a company leaks or abuses it

A leaked address can keep drawing scams for years if it is also your permanent inbox identity.

Why this matters

A leaked address can keep drawing scams for years if it is also your permanent inbox identity. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

The protection

Proton's hide-my-email aliases can be disabled when one becomes a spam or phishing target.

Take action

Turn off the compromised alias after moving any important account tied to it. The leak itself cannot be undone. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
