## Why this matters

A newsletter link can carry identifiers that follow your click into a website. Privacy is easier to defend before this information is collected than after it has spread.

## The protection

Proton Mail for web and desktop cleans known UTM and other tracking parameters from links.

## Take action

Read and open marketing mail in the protected app. Custom parameters are not always recognized, and mobile behavior differs. Email protection depends on the route and settings. Ordinary mail involving outside providers is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, and email metadata is not universally hidden.
