Switch to Linux Reason #9: Keep search on your computer from feeding a corporate ecosystem
A desktop search box can become a bridge from local files to web results and product suggestions.
Why this matters now
A desktop search box can become a bridge from local files to web results and product suggestions. That blurs the boundary between searching your own machine and querying a company. Microsoft documents an advertising ID and optional personalized offers that may use device activity, diagnostic data, account information, and data from its other services. The settings can be changed, but the machinery exists inside the OS (Windows recommendations and offers).
What changes with Linux
Select a Linux desktop whose local search behavior you can inspect and configure. Keep web search in a browser with a provider you deliberately choose. KDE documents control over the desktop layout, panels, icons, window decorations, and other interface parts. A usable computer need not freeze its owner's workflow at a vendor's preferred design (KDE Plasma customization documentation). GNOME documents controls for location services, recent-file history, screen locking, and deletion of temporary files. These settings illustrate that private desktop behavior can be configured directly by the person using it (GNOME privacy settings).
Make the move
Test file search and launcher behavior before switching fully. Disable online integrations you do not need, and check what searches leave the device.
A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
