Switch to Linux Reason #83: Keep your workspace free of product placement
When a workspace advertises subscriptions or partner services, a private tool has become a storefront.
Why this matters now
When a workspace advertises subscriptions or partner services, a private tool has become a storefront. Microsoft documents an advertising ID and optional personalized offers that may use device activity, diagnostic data, account information, and data from its other services. The settings can be changed, but the machinery exists inside the OS (Windows recommendations and offers).
What changes with Linux
Community Linux desktops can be configured around applications rather than campaigns. The freedom to change software makes that boundary more durable. KDE documents control over the desktop layout, panels, icons, window decorations, and other interface parts. A usable computer need not freeze its owner's workflow at a vendor's preferred design (KDE Plasma customization documentation). GNU defines free software through the rights to run, study, change, and share it, including commercial use. These are practical rights that allow a community to repair or fork tools when priorities diverge (GNU free-software definition).
Make the move
Choose a distribution after seeing its default desktop, not just screenshots. Remove optional commercial integrations and verify no needed security notices vanish with them.
A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
