Switch to Linux Reason #8: Stop accepting promotional notifications as system messages

A security alert deserves attention; a vendor's upgrade pitch does not.

Why this matters now

A security alert deserves attention; a vendor's upgrade pitch does not. Mixing them trains people to ignore the very notices that protect their machines. Microsoft documents an advertising ID and optional personalized offers that may use device activity, diagnostic data, account information, and data from its other services. The settings can be changed, but the machinery exists inside the OS (Windows recommendations and offers).

What changes with Linux

Linux lets you select notification-producing applications and remove ones that serve a marketing role. Security advisories can come from the distribution's documented update channels. Debian publishes security advisories and documents both manual updates and the optional unattended-upgrades package. Security maintenance can be organized around the user's needs rather than a marketing channel (Debian security information). KDE documents control over the desktop layout, panels, icons, window decorations, and other interface parts. A usable computer need not freeze its owner's workflow at a vendor's preferred design (KDE Plasma customization documentation).

Make the move

Separate update notices from promotions now. After installing Linux, verify that security update notifications are visible and that optional commercial apps cannot dominate your desktop.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
