## Why this matters now

A seamless ecosystem can hide the fact that identity, files, and settings all move through one vendor. Convenience should be worth the specific information shared. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path ([Windows Backup documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/backup-recovery/back-up-and-restore-with-windows-backup)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux lets you combine local software with only the integrations you choose. A self-hosted or independent sync service can replace some vendor ties, though it adds responsibility. Nextcloud documents file access, synchronization, sharing, versioning, and ownership transfer for servers users can choose. Self-hosting adds administration responsibility but makes the storage provider a choice ([Nextcloud files and synchronization](https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/user_manual/en/files/)). Debian publicly commits to free software, open bug reporting, and putting users and the free-software community first. That is a governance commitment users can inspect rather than a promise hidden in marketing ([Debian Social Contract](https://www.debian.org/social_contract)).

## Make the move

For every integration, ask what data it needs and where it stores it. Remove one that cannot justify its access, then test the workflow without it.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
