## Why this matters now

Notes often contain ideas, passwords accidentally copied, health details, and unfinished thoughts. They should not become a perpetual corporate record by default. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path ([Windows Backup documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/backup-recovery/back-up-and-restore-with-windows-backup)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux can store plain-text or open-format notes locally, with optional encryption and backup. Portability makes it easier to change editors later. Ubuntu documents LUKS-based full-disk encryption and passphrase-based unlocking. Encryption protects data at rest on a lost device when configured correctly; it does not protect an unlocked session or online account ([Ubuntu full-disk encryption](https://documentation.ubuntu.com/security/security-features/storage/encryption-full-disk/)). LibreOffice documents native OpenDocument support alongside interoperability with common proprietary office formats. Open formats lower the cost of leaving a vendor, though complex documents should be tested for fidelity ([LibreOffice technology and formats](https://www.libreoffice.org/libreoffice-technology/)).

## Make the move

Export notes now, inspect the export for completeness, and keep an encrypted copy. Decide explicitly whether any sync service should receive them.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
