## Why this matters now

A calendar reveals movements, meetings, appointments, and routines. It deserves a deliberate storage choice. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path ([Windows Backup documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/backup-recovery/back-up-and-restore-with-windows-backup)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux clients can work with local calendars or a server you choose, including self-hosted services. The convenience of sync should not obscure who can read the schedule. Nextcloud documents file access, synchronization, sharing, versioning, and ownership transfer for servers users can choose. Self-hosting adds administration responsibility but makes the storage provider a choice ([Nextcloud files and synchronization](https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/user_manual/en/files/)). Debian publicly commits to free software, open bug reporting, and putting users and the free-software community first. That is a governance commitment users can inspect rather than a promise hidden in marketing ([Debian Social Contract](https://www.debian.org/social_contract)).

## Make the move

Export your calendar, verify recurring events, and test a chosen client before leaving the old provider. Protect shared calendars with careful permissions.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
