Switch to Linux Reason #75: Keep your contacts in a system you can export

A contact list contains other people's details, not just yours.

Why this matters now

A contact list contains other people's details, not just yours. Locking it into one account gives a provider leverage over your relationships. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path (Windows Backup documentation).

What changes with Linux

Linux can work with local address books and independently chosen sync providers. Open formats and export tools make moving later more realistic. Nextcloud documents file access, synchronization, sharing, versioning, and ownership transfer for servers users can choose. Self-hosting adds administration responsibility but makes the storage provider a choice (Nextcloud files and synchronization). Debian explains that software freedom concerns the ability to use, study, modify, and redistribute programs, not merely a zero-dollar price. These rights make an exit from a bad vendor relationship practical (Debian's explanation of free software).

Make the move

Export contacts in a standard format, verify names and fields, and store an encrypted backup. Check the privacy policy of any sync service you add.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
