Switch to Linux Reason #74: Use local applications for work you do not want uploaded

A private draft may not need collaboration or cloud analysis.

Why this matters now

A private draft may not need collaboration or cloud analysis. Requiring an online editor creates a data flow for no practical reason. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path (Windows Backup documentation).

What changes with Linux

Linux supports local office and creative applications. LibreOffice can save in open formats without sending the document to a server. LibreOffice documents native OpenDocument support alongside interoperability with common proprietary office formats. Open formats lower the cost of leaving a vendor, though complex documents should be tested for fidelity (LibreOffice technology and formats). Debian describes a free operating system with a package manager and a large software archive. That provides a concrete route to getting essential tools without making one commercial store the gatekeeper (About Debian).

Make the move

Install the needed apps and test them with Wi-Fi off. Review extensions and templates because an otherwise local app can still add online features.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
