Switch to Linux Reason #73: Choose an email client that does not feed an ad ecosystem
Email contains receipts, account resets, and intimate correspondence.
Why this matters now
Email contains receipts, account resets, and intimate correspondence. The client should not be selected by the OS vendor's advertising interests. Microsoft documents an advertising ID and optional personalized offers that may use device activity, diagnostic data, account information, and data from its other services. The settings can be changed, but the machinery exists inside the OS (Windows recommendations and offers).
What changes with Linux
Linux software repositories provide multiple email clients and web browsers, so you can choose the provider and client separately. The provider's privacy model still matters most. Debian describes a free operating system with a package manager and a large software archive. That provides a concrete route to getting essential tools without making one commercial store the gatekeeper (About Debian). Debian publicly commits to free software, open bug reporting, and putting users and the free-software community first. That is a governance commitment users can inspect rather than a promise hidden in marketing (Debian Social Contract).
Make the move
Export mail or configure IMAP carefully, test an offline copy, and choose a provider with policies you understand. Secure the account with strong authentication.
A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
