Switch to Linux Reason #72: Choose your search engine without fighting the desktop

Search terms can reveal financial fears, medical questions, and political interests.

Why this matters now

Search terms can reveal financial fears, medical questions, and political interests. The search provider should be an explicit choice. Microsoft documents an advertising ID and optional personalized offers that may use device activity, diagnostic data, account information, and data from its other services. The settings can be changed, but the machinery exists inside the OS (Windows recommendations and offers).

What changes with Linux

Linux desktops can keep local launchers separate from web search and let the browser manage the chosen search provider. Check the specific desktop's settings. KDE documents control over the desktop layout, panels, icons, window decorations, and other interface parts. A usable computer need not freeze its owner's workflow at a vendor's preferred design (KDE Plasma customization documentation). GNOME documents controls for location services, recent-file history, screen locking, and deletion of temporary files. These settings illustrate that private desktop behavior can be configured directly by the person using it (GNOME privacy settings).

Make the move

Set the provider in your browser and test searches from the desktop launcher. Disable any online suggestions you do not want.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
