## Why this matters now

A stolen laptop can expose years of private files if the disk is readable. Encryption should protect local data without requiring online storage. Ubuntu documents LUKS-based full-disk encryption and passphrase-based unlocking. Encryption protects data at rest on a lost device when configured correctly; it does not protect an unlocked session or online account ([Ubuntu full-disk encryption](https://documentation.ubuntu.com/security/security-features/storage/encryption-full-disk/)).

## What changes with Linux

Ubuntu documents LUKS full-disk encryption using a passphrase. The keys can remain under your control, and local files can stay off a cloud service. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path ([Windows Backup documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/backup-recovery/back-up-and-restore-with-windows-backup)). Debian documents local user accounts, groups, privilege separation, and sudo. Those ordinary system controls let a person manage access without making a cloud identity the root of every desktop task ([Debian authentication and access controls](https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch04.en.html)).

## Make the move

Choose encryption during installation, store recovery material safely, and test your backup. Encryption protects a powered-off device, not an unlocked session.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
