## Why this matters now

A repairable computer with a supported OS can be safer and less costly than a neglected new machine. Ownership includes the ability to maintain both hardware and software. Debian publishes its release branches and a roughly five-year stable release lifecycle, including long-term support. A visible support calendar lets people plan upgrades instead of being surprised by a vendor deadline ([Debian release lifecycle](https://www.debian.org/releases/)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux's distribution choices and free software rights make replacement of software components possible. They cannot fix a failing disk or missing firmware by themselves. GNU defines free software through the rights to run, study, change, and share it, including commercial use. These are practical rights that allow a community to repair or fork tools when priorities diverge ([GNU free-software definition](https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html)). Debian publishes security advisories and documents both manual updates and the optional unattended-upgrades package. Security maintenance can be organized around the user's needs rather than a marketing channel ([Debian security information](https://www.debian.org/security/)).

## Make the move

Check disk health, replace worn parts, install a supported release, and keep verified backups. Reuse is responsible only when the machine remains maintainable.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
