Switch to Linux Reason #6: Keep your Start menu from becoming a sales channel
The menu used to launch your work is valuable real estate.
Why this matters now
The menu used to launch your work is valuable real estate. When it recommends products, the interface serves a seller at the moment you are trying to act. Microsoft documents an advertising ID and optional personalized offers that may use device activity, diagnostic data, account information, and data from its other services. The settings can be changed, but the machinery exists inside the OS (Windows recommendations and offers).
What changes with Linux
Linux desktops such as KDE Plasma let you configure launchers, panels, and shortcuts around your own tasks. No store promotion is needed for the menu to function. KDE documents control over the desktop layout, panels, icons, window decorations, and other interface parts. A usable computer need not freeze its owner's workflow at a vendor's preferred design (KDE Plasma customization documentation). Debian publicly commits to free software, open bug reporting, and putting users and the free-software community first. That is a governance commitment users can inspect rather than a promise hidden in marketing (Debian Social Contract).
Make the move
Try a live desktop and remove or rearrange entries until only your tools remain. Examine your chosen distro's defaults rather than assuming every Linux desktop is identical.
A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
