## Why this matters now

Discarding a machine because one vendor no longer supports it wastes materials, money, and repair effort. Replacement should follow actual hardware failure or a considered security need. Microsoft lists a Microsoft account and internet connection for initial setup of Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use, along with specific hardware requirements. These are vendor decisions about access to a general-purpose computer ([Windows 11 specifications](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11-specifications)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux can offer a maintained path for compatible devices beyond their original OS cycle. Open software and multiple distributions reduce dependence on a single replacement deadline. Debian publishes its release branches and a roughly five-year stable release lifecycle, including long-term support. A visible support calendar lets people plan upgrades instead of being surprised by a vendor deadline ([Debian release lifecycle](https://www.debian.org/releases/)). GNU defines free software through the rights to run, study, change, and share it, including commercial use. These are practical rights that allow a community to repair or fork tools when priorities diverge ([GNU free-software definition](https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html)).

## Make the move

Before recycling, test Linux on the machine and see whether it can serve a real role. Wipe storage securely if donating it, and avoid promising unsupported hardware is safe.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
