Switch to Linux Reason #55: Give an older laptop a secure, maintained second life
An unpatched old OS is unsafe for banking or personal mail, but discarding the laptop wastes a useful device.
Why this matters now
An unpatched old OS is unsafe for banking or personal mail, but discarding the laptop wastes a useful device. Microsoft lists a Microsoft account and internet connection for initial setup of Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use, along with specific hardware requirements. These are vendor decisions about access to a general-purpose computer (Windows 11 specifications).
What changes with Linux
A supported Linux release can receive security fixes on compatible older hardware. This is a testable opportunity, not a guarantee that every old driver works. Debian publishes security advisories and documents both manual updates and the optional unattended-upgrades package. Security maintenance can be organized around the user's needs rather than a marketing channel (Debian security information). Ubuntu documents LUKS-based full-disk encryption and passphrase-based unlocking. Encryption protects data at rest on a lost device when configured correctly; it does not protect an unlocked session or online account (Ubuntu full-disk encryption).
Make the move
Use a live USB to check networking, camera, suspend, and battery. Install a supported release and configure encryption if the device leaves home.
A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
