Switch to Linux Reason #5: Reject advertising IDs built into the operating system
A system-wide advertising identifier makes the computer itself part of the ad stack.
Why this matters now
A system-wide advertising identifier makes the computer itself part of the ad stack. Switching off personalized ads may change targeting without removing the incentive to collect data. Microsoft documents an advertising ID and optional personalized offers that may use device activity, diagnostic data, account information, and data from its other services. The settings can be changed, but the machinery exists inside the OS (Windows recommendations and offers).
What changes with Linux
Choose a Linux distribution and desktop that do not build an advertising ID into ordinary use. You can still install an ad-funded app, so application choice remains part of the defense. Debian publicly commits to free software, open bug reporting, and putting users and the free-software community first. That is a governance commitment users can inspect rather than a promise hidden in marketing (Debian Social Contract). GNU defines free software through the rights to run, study, change, and share it, including commercial use. These are practical rights that allow a community to repair or fork tools when priorities diverge (GNU free-software definition).
Make the move
Check the OS's privacy settings today, then plan a Linux migration that includes the browser, apps, and mobile services that carry the same identity.
A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
