## Why this matters now

An unplanned redesign can slow a worker who depends on muscle memory, accessibility settings, or a carefully taught workflow. Microsoft says Windows downloads and installs updates automatically and groups many required restarts into a monthly cycle. That may be convenient, but the vendor still controls the default update policy ([Microsoft's Windows update guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/os/windows/docs/2026/07/kb5121772-one-restart-a-month-for-windows-updates)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux offers desktop choices, and KDE documents direct control over layouts and appearance. A stable release gives you time to test bigger changes before adoption. KDE documents control over the desktop layout, panels, icons, window decorations, and other interface parts. A usable computer need not freeze its owner's workflow at a vendor's preferred design ([KDE Plasma customization documentation](https://docs.kde.org/stable_kf6/en/plasma-workspace/kcontrol/lookandfeel/)). Debian publishes its release branches and a roughly five-year stable release lifecycle, including long-term support. A visible support calendar lets people plan upgrades instead of being surprised by a vendor deadline ([Debian release lifecycle](https://www.debian.org/releases/)).

## Make the move

Photograph or document your current workflow, then reproduce it in a live Linux desktop. Upgrade the desktop after testing, not on the morning of a deadline.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
