## Why this matters now

A computer becomes unsafe when its OS stops receiving fixes, even if the hardware still works. A vague support promise is not enough. Microsoft lists a Microsoft account and internet connection for initial setup of Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use, along with specific hardware requirements. These are vendor decisions about access to a general-purpose computer ([Windows 11 specifications](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11-specifications)).

## What changes with Linux

Debian publishes release dates and a multi-year lifecycle, making it possible to plan upgrades. Other distributions use different schedules, so choose one you can maintain. Debian publishes its release branches and a roughly five-year stable release lifecycle, including long-term support. A visible support calendar lets people plan upgrades instead of being surprised by a vendor deadline ([Debian release lifecycle](https://www.debian.org/releases/)). Debian publishes security advisories and documents both manual updates and the optional unattended-upgrades package. Security maintenance can be organized around the user's needs rather than a marketing channel ([Debian security information](https://www.debian.org/security/)).

## Make the move

Write the end-of-support date beside your backup plan and calendar the next upgrade. Do not install a release you will be unable to patch.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
