## Why this matters now

A restart during a meeting, repair job, or long calculation can cost real time. The machine owner should decide when a completed update takes effect. Microsoft says Windows downloads and installs updates automatically and groups many required restarts into a monthly cycle. That may be convenient, but the vendor still controls the default update policy ([Microsoft's Windows update guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/os/windows/docs/2026/07/kb5121772-one-restart-a-month-for-windows-updates)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux distributions usually let you schedule package upgrades and reboots around the workday. Some kernel fixes require a restart; control means planning it, not avoiding it forever. Debian publishes security advisories and documents both manual updates and the optional unattended-upgrades package. Security maintenance can be organized around the user's needs rather than a marketing channel ([Debian security information](https://www.debian.org/security/)). Debian publishes its release branches and a roughly five-year stable release lifecycle, including long-term support. A visible support calendar lets people plan upgrades instead of being surprised by a vendor deadline ([Debian release lifecycle](https://www.debian.org/releases/)).

## Make the move

Check update notices daily and reserve a maintenance window. Restart after security changes when required, then verify essential applications launch.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
